IPv6 for Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (Cooperative ITS)
Welcome to the first site on the applicability of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) to Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS)! The objective of this page is to gather information on IPv6 related to Cooperative ITS.
Events
Why the ITS world has to care about IPv6 ?
- EC ITS Directive (Aug.2010)
- EC Mandate M/453 to ETSI and CEN (ITS Station Reference Architecture and its set of standards, including IPv6)
- ITS would need tons of IP addresses (e.g. minimum 1 per vehicle, but more presumably tens per vehcile): there won't be any public IPv4 addresses left in a couple of years
- IPv4 address space depleted at IANA level since Feb.1st 2011 (IANA provides block to regional entities providing sub-blocks to ISPs and large groups)
- 2008-05: EC IPv6 Action Plan
- 2007-11: Impact of IPv6 on vertical sectors
- 2007-05: IANA count down set to Dec. 2009
- RIPE Community Resolution on IPv4 Depletion and Deployment of IPv6, RIPE Statement Oct.2007]]

- "IPv6, the new Internet Protocol" the old “IPv6 bible”)
- IPv6 Essentials from Silvia Hagen in both German and English: the good thing about them is that Silvia writes it in a way that is also understandable by people who didn't do much networking before. The other books can be a bit more technical, but as this is a technical topic that should not scare you away from them [as stated on the IETF IPv6 mailing list ipv6@ietf.org on October 2007 (https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/ipv6)]
