  abstract = {{CityMobil project, a large integrated project co-funded by DG RESEARCH of the European Commission, organized in La Rochelle an advanced city car showcase in which it gave to the citizens the possibility to ride driverless vehicles. 256 users where interviewed. Responses where very positive with all indicators passing the threshold of positive acceptance; only the perception of safety was on the threshold but not above. Such positive response of the citizens to the new transport systems showcased in La Rochelle convinced the city to implement a larger demonstrator with fully automated vehicles. The demonstration supplies a shuttle service in a street with restricted traffic access and presence of pedestrians. It starts in May 2011 and lasts for three months until the end of July. This is the first ever demonstrator in which fully automated vehicles are legally authorized to run a passenger transport service in an unprotected environment.}},

  abstract = {{In the framework of the CityMobil project (EC's FP6, 2006-2011), the City of La Rochelle proposed a semi-dedicated site near the city centre to demonstrate, test and evaluate a cybercar system (fully automated vehicles with four to eight-passenger capacity) operating on-demand for six months. The cybercar system will link an electric 'sea bus' station with a Bus Rapid Transit line stop (distant 800m from each other), in a 'horizontal lift' operation starting in early 2011. Beyond mobility and technical research aspects, the setup process of this demonstration project has raised financial, industrial and legal challenges. Based on this experience, this presentation will give a view of the key challenges that applications of automated transport systems face today in urban environments.}},

This paper deals with the methodology applied to select the cities where the research activities will be conducted. Finally, we present an initial typology of the sites and applications of CTS based on the sites presented by the candidate cities.}},

This paper deals with the detailed description of the selected urban contexts where these systems will be studied and an initial typology of potential APTS - PRT - CTS applications in Europe.}},

Une flotte de cybercars forme un syst{\`e}me cybern{\'e}tique de transport (CTS), pour passagers ou marchandises, sur un r{\'e}seau routier, avec capacit{\'e} de service {\`a} la demande et porte-{\`a}-porte. Les v{\'e}hicules bimodaux sont des v{\'e}hicules avec capacit{\'e} de conduite enti{\`e}rement automatis{\'e}e mais qui peuvent aussi {\^e}tre conduits manuellement. Le projet CityMobil, financ{\'e} par le 7e PC de la Commission Europ{\'e}enne, a pour objectif g{\'e}n{\'e}ral de contribuer {\`a} l'obtention d'une organisation plus pertinente du transport urbain {\`a} travers le d{\'e}veloppement de solutions int{\'e}gr{\'e}es de trafic avec v{\'e}hicules routiers autonomes et automatiques pour passagers et marchandises, ins{\'e}r{\'e}s dans une configuration spatiale avanc{\'e}e. Cet objectif sera accompli par l'investigation en conditions urbaines r{\'e}elles de la mesure dans laquelle les syst{\`e}mes avanc{\'e}s de transport peuvent contribuer {\`a} un usage plus rationnel du trafic motoris{\'e}, {\`a} moins de congestion et de pollution, {\`a} une conduite plus s{\^u}re, {\`a} une meilleure qualit{\'e} de vie et {\`a} une int{\'e}gration am{\'e}lior{\'e}e du transport avec le contexte spatial. Des d{\'e}monstrateurs {\`a} grande {\'e}chelle seront mis en place dans trois sites, Heathrow (Royaume-Uni), Castell{\'o}n (Espagne) and Rome (Italie), afin d'investiguer le concept de syst{\`e}mes de transport innovants int{\'e}gr{\'e}s dans l'environnement urbain. Le consortium a aussi cr{\'e}{\'e} le Groupe de R{\'e}f{\'e}rence, un groupe de villes qui ont exprim{\'e} un r{\'e}el int{\'e}r{\^e}t dans l'organisation d'une d{\'e}monstration ou dans l'impl{\'e}mentation d'un syst{\`e}me avanc{\'e} de transport int{\'e}grant ces technologies. Dans la premi{\`e}re ann{\'e}e du projet, les villes ont {\'e}t{\'e} actives dans la d{\'e}finition de leurs probl{\'e}matiques de mobilit{\'e} et dans la fa{\c c}on dont les CTS et les v{\'e}hicules bimodaux pourraient contribuer {\`a} les r{\'e}soudre. Certaines villes ont {\'e}t{\'e} s{\'e}lectionn{\'e}es pour r{\'e}aliser, en plus des d{\'e}monstrations {\`a} grande {\'e}chelle, des d{\'e}monstrations de courte dur{\'e}e (2-3 semaines) nomm{\'e}es « showcases ». Leur objectif principal est de montrer aux autorit{\'e}s, acteurs du transport et citoyens les nouveaux concepts de mobilit{\'e} offerts par les CTS et les v{\'e}hicules bimodaux. Les r{\'e}sultats de cette s{\'e}lection donnent une meilleure connaissance du contexte urbain dans lequel les v{\'e}hicules autonomes et automatiques peuvent s'int{\'e}grer en Europe. La participation des villes permet d'{\'e}valuer la pertinence des sc{\'e}narios d'int{\'e}gration de ces syst{\`e}mes dans l'environnement urbain envisag{\'e}s par les projets de recherche pr{\'e}c{\'e}dents. Cette communication mettra en parall{\`e}le les sc{\'e}narios d'int{\'e}gration envisag{\'e}s par les projets de recherche pr{\'e}c{\'e}dents avec les contextes urbains et les probl{\'e}matiques de mobilit{\'e} pour lesquelles les villes s{\'e}lectionn{\'e}es consid{\`e}rent les CTS et les v{\'e}hicules bimodaux comme une solution viable. On traitera aussi des caract{\'e}ristiques communes entre les villes qui ont particip{\'e} au Groupe de r{\'e}f{\'e}rence et des motivations qu'elles {\'e}voquent pour l'impl{\'e}mentation de ces syst{\`e}mes. Cela permettra d'identifier d'autres villes potentiellement int{\'e}ress{\'e}es dans des futures actions de recherche sur l'impl{\'e}mentation de ces solutions avanc{\'e}es de transport.}},
